About Newton Medical Center

Newton Medical Center is a hospital in Newton, New Jersey that’s in the Atlantic Health System network. Their behavioral health department treats people with addiction and those with co-occurring disorders. They help adults as well as teens. If you’re in crisis they can provide emergency care to ensure your safety and comfort as you begin your recovery journey.

You can get either inpatient or outpatient care depending on your needs and recovery goals. Inpatient care gives you intensive addiction treatment while you stay at the hospital. That’s a great option for people who are in their early recovery and need a supervised and supportive environment. Since staff is there around the clock you also know you’ll have care any time you need it.

Their outpatient programs are more suitable for people who are fairly stable but still need active treatment to help them stay sober. You’d still live at home and you’d come to the medical center for your therapy and other treatment.

Their treatment programs vary depending on your recovery and what you need. They offer medications to help with withdrawal symptoms. If you’re experiencing opioid or alcohol dependency you might also receive FDA approved medications for a longer time period to support your sustained sobriety. They’ll help you learn how to prevent relapse. They can connect you with other rehabs or resources that can help you too like detox centers. That’s just part of the way this behavioral health department runs as a comprehensive rehab for your recovery.

I went here last night for pain from kidney stones 7mm & 9mm big. Not only did I have to listen to a guy scream that the hospital is holding him against his will in the ER. They brought me to a bed treated my ache with Flexeril not my sharp pain and said no one was there to do an ultrasound to see if my stones moved. They sent me home with 14 pills of Naproxen(Tylenol basically) and 7 pills of Flexeril to take at bedtime when I am sleeping!?! So nothing to help my pain at all from my stones. She said they will need a shockwave treatment and sent me home. So I woke up today and I can t even bend over from the pain, still nauseous, still light headed and still feeling like I have to pee every 20 seconds. This hospital is literally the worst. If you want treatment and relief and someone to take your concerns seriously go to another location. Newton is awful. Sincerely a mom of 4 kids one an infant walking around with kidney stones because Newton hospital is the worst.

My wife and I came here for the birth of our child. The maternity ward was absolutely stellar in their service. Everybody we interacted with was very professional and courteous, particularly all of the nurses. Lorraine was extremely knowledgeable and on top of everything. Morgan, Bianca, and Nicolle were sweethearts. Great bedside manner and always a quick buzz away. Carrie and Sue, our nursery nurses, were warm and great with our little one. Any concerns or requests for medication were attended to immediately. When the decision for a c-section was made, our baby boy was with us no sooner than 30 minutes later. The doctors were all thorough, kind, and talented in carrying out the surgery with no complications. The entire experience was reassuring and comfortable throughout. Everything we needed was provided to us. Room was comfortable. Food service was prompt. Honestly couldn't have had a better experience. Perfect remarks for everyone involved!

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Group-based psycho-education and therapy is provided during a three-hour period, three to five days a week. Because patients in our program return home after treatment sessions, they can more quickly begin the transition to everyday living situations and challenges.
outpatient iconOutpatient
Overcoming a drug or alcohol addiction is a difficult process, but through careful evaluation and individual determination, it can be accomplished. At Atlantic Behavioral Health, their outpatient chemical dependency programs help adults and adolescents overcome substance abuse issues, while remaining at home, at school or on the job.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient mental health programs are designed to help stabilize those with mental illnesses. At Atlantic Behavioral Health, they encourage personal empowerment among their hospitalized patients through self-awareness and education. After a successful treatment, patients can return to the care of their psychiatrist or clinician and when necessary, may be referred to an intensive outpatient program. For those with persistent and severe mental illness, residential services provide a means of safe, affordable housing, accompanied by community-based psychiatric rehabilitation. At Atlantic Behavioral Health, they provide their residents with the support they need to develop social interactive skills and greater independence.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
In the event of a psychiatric emergency, Atlantic Behavioral Health offers crisis intervention services, including a 24-hour hotline, risk assessments and screenings, and community trauma assistance. Newton Medical Center is a state-designated Psychiatric Emergency Services and Screening Center, providing 24-hour emergency mental health care to patients of any age, both over the phone and in person.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Accommodations include two supervised group homes and several semi-supervised apartments. Priority is given to patients recently discharged from state psychiatric facilities that need a supervised living arrangement. A reasonable rent is required for participation.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in New Jersey is the process of addressing the complex issues involved with addiction. Challenges are identified and addressed through individual and group counseling. Participants learn how to manage these issues without the use of substances.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
hiv-aids-program thumbnail image
HIV/AIDS Program
HIV/AIDS programs support disease prevention and management in high-risk individuals in recovery. Individuals who engage in intravenous drug use and other addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of becoming infected with HIV. Rehab centers that specialize in treating this population typically have a high number of nurses, physicians, and psychiatrists on staff who can make sure both their medical and mental health needs are met.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Pet therapy can have many physical and emotional benefits for hospital patients, including reduced blood pressure and stress. Atlantic Health System's pet therapy program, Soothing Paws®, has approximately 80 pet therapy teams, each made up of a hospital volunteer and his or her trained dog, that visit patients and their loved ones in their hospitals.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Counseling that includes parental and family involvement is central to their program and highly encouraged. Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Diet can directly affect a person’s physical health, mental well-being and overall quality of life. Eating healthfully – ensuring that you get the nutrients you need to stay well and manage any health problems – can significantly decrease the amount of medication needed to treat a disease. Overlook Medical Center’s outpatient dietitians are experts in medical nutrition therapy, preventative medicine, current research findings, behavioral change strategies and mindfulness training.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. When a traumatic or catastrophic event occurs – whether at school, work, the neighborhood or larger community – Atlantic Behavioral Health is there to help survivors, witnesses and their families begin the healing process.

It was worse than the first. Waited Waited Waited to see a cardiologist so tests could be scheduled.I spent all day lying in bed. They did not want me to get up because when I stood or walked the heart monitor went haywire. I'm sorry but don't you want to know my hr when I am in motionI am not bedridden. Awful

Avoid, Newton ER at all costs. My daughter was sent home without getting any treatment for her fractured elbow. The Hospital did not have a radiologist Dr who could read the x-ray and the staff (God knows who they were) stated "no findings". We were discharged with "icing and ibuprofen"Next morning the hospital called back (at least they did that) and acknowledged their mistakes and said the x-ray was "misread".Now I wonder what else did hospital might miss..,...

My husband and I have come here 4 other times with nothing but great experiences. This time not so much. My husband suffered a really bad grand mal seizure, only second one in his life. They kept him overnight. The next day I come in to go to the tests with him. They told me I was not allowed to accompany him even though I was highly encouraged to keep him company the last time through an EEG and MRI. This time the nurses lacked any compassion and had horrible bedside manner, and simply told me no because they didn t feel like dealing with me. I went to complain to another nurse and she said I absolutely should ve been allowed to stay. As his wife, they legally should not have told me no considering none of the tests would ve been affected by me being there and he wanted me there. They re lucky I don t file a formal complaint or more since my husband was not in the right state of mind to advocate for himself. On top of that when I was outside to try and catch a breath from being so frustrated this older woman needed help getting inside, I told the front desk someone outside needed a wheelchair and they told me to grab it myself and help her! As if I was an employee. Do they not have nurses to do this? They couldn t be bothered to help someone struggling right outside their hospital. I will never have a problem helping somebody in need, but I have a problem with the complete lack of empathy. Extremely disappointed by our experience this time around.

Jenna, John, Kelly in ICU and Joseph M., the registered nurse in ACU, truly embodied compassion and professionalism during a challenging time for our family facing the impending loss of a loved one. His attentiveness and understanding went beyond the call of duty; he not only provided exceptional medical care but also created an environment that allowed the family to spend precious moments together. Joseph took the time to explain the situation clearly and compassionately, ensuring that the family felt supported and informed throughout the process. His presence provided a sense of comfort and reassurance when we needed it the most.Equally commendable was the cafeteria staff, who played a vital role in supporting the family during this difficult time. They were accommodating and sensitive to the needs of those who were grieving, offering tasty meals and hot beverages to sustain them during long hours at the hospital
