About Atlanta VA Health Care System – Blairsville Clinic

Blairsville VA Clinic is a treatment facility located in Blairsville, Georgia. Here, they specialize in treating veterans who are struggling with mental health conditions and substance abuse disorders. The levels of care provided are primary care, family therapy, individual counseling, telehealth, medication management and social services, all provided in an outpatient setting. They accept Tricare, Medicaid and Medicare insurance.

To better assist you, a comprehensive evaluation will be completed during the intake process to help honor your needs and connect you to the most appropriate level of care. They will then discuss your options and develop an individualized treatment plan.

Reaching out for help can be uncomfortable, especially if you’re accustomed to doing things on your own. However, during a time of transitioning into a healthier lifestyle, having support and guidance can make the road to recovery much more manageable. During individual therapy, they will work with you to help you achieve the goals you have set for yourself during treatment.

They will incorporate holistic therapies to help you gain the tools to overcome past trauma and prepare you for challenges that can arise. Building self-confidence, developing coping skills, rebuilding trust, managing anger and learning how to regulate your mood will be some of the areas they will assist you with,

Family therapy creates a safe space for you and your loved ones a chance to heal together. Vocalizing resentments and expressing concern can be very common among loved ones who may have been impacted by substance abuse. In family therapy, resolving conflict, building trust, strengthening healthier communication skills and creating boundaries will be some of the many areas that will be discussed.

Their social services can include linkages to local and community resources. Housing placement, food assistance, emergency shelter and employment assistance are some of the many services they can connect you to.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Fitness therapy blends exercise with psychotherapy for a fun, inspiring, and effective way of treating addiction and other issues. By incorporating movement into counseling sessions, clients become more empowered, motivated, and goal-oriented, all while strengthening their bodies and becoming more flexible. Fitness Therapy is usually used to complement a course of treatment (inpatient or outpatient) to make it even more successful. Increasing the connection between a patient’s mind and body helps both with healing as well as in creating new, healthy habits.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

They are very pleasant to deal with and generally go above and beyond to help. However, I wouldn't waste the time with their urgent care. It's far better to go to an urgent care that is affiliated with the VA so you can get the treatment you need. I needed a simple antibiotic for a very common infection. I called and they asked me to rush in to give a bio sample. They did not mention that they would withhold treatment for 4-5 days until their lab processed the sample. In the past, I've been prescribed an antibiotic to avoid the infection worsening. They suggested drinking cranberry juice, which is not effective.I've attached a photo of places that can address urgent medical concerns in a timely manner.

Have been calling for 2 weeks. No one answers the phone. Sent an email one week ago today, no answer.Walked in last week, they would not even talk to me (very rude) unless I filled out a Health Benefits Update Form they gave me. Would not even let me explain why I was there. I am already registered at another facility and just wanted to ask about available services here in Blairsville. This is not a very good place if you need help.

Just got done with my first visit to the Blairsville VA clinic. I can t speak to others experiences here, but from start to finish it was an excellent visit. From Joann who checked me in to Melissa the nurse to Jessica my PA and everyone I interacted with.It s a nice facility, too. Clean, good wait times. No complaints. For those who talk about calling, I am sure it s frustrating but tbh use secure messaging it s always quicker to get whatever you need taken care of.Very happy with my switch to this clinic.

Never have I called this office and successfully had anyone answer the phone. I ve called several times on several different days and waited anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour and still no success in getting someone on the phone. There is no excuse for that at all. I ve been to other clinics around the country, just as busy, with only one or 2 front desk members and never had this much disappointment.

I went to Dr john Quigley in April 2022. I told Dr quigley I had chest Pains , shortness of breath, and general weakness for a couple of months... It took begging for a month or more to get a face to face . VA had denied me face to face appointments for 3 yrs due to pandemic , they said...... when I saw Dr Quigley he spent about 4 minutes with me and sent me home ...... No ECG, no XRays .. He said I was fine................ i had congestive Heart Failure, I had Pneumonia, and serious edema .... I wound up in the ER 3 times a month later and nearly died from my condition.. Finally with a congressional Inquiry I was avble to get into the VA Community Care network and get Treatment from Piedmont Heart Institue in Ellijay .. they saved my Life.

My husband and I have been to this clinic a few times strictly for labs when we are in town. I want to give this place more stars ( because there are some genuinely sweet people here) but I just can t. We can t speak to the care of the doctors here and the staff seems great but we have had horrific experiences because of the office manager. I believe she is Puerto Rican and I m giving her the benefit of the doubt that there is a language barrier , but good grief her interpersonal/communication skills are awful and she has treated my husband and I AWFUL. The first time we went in there there was a slight mix up with paper work which is par for the course (no big deal) and every-time I tried to explain our situation (nicely) she interrupted me, blatantly. After trying to speak 4 times I politely said I am just going to wait outside since I m not able to speak. My husband at that point sternly told her she wasn t going to disrespect his wife and to please let me speak. She then said do you want help or not. She was so rude that even the staff were apologizing. This last visit I didn t have a mask on, I didn t not wear one on purpose I just didn t think about it because it hasn t been enforced lately. She told me to wait in a conference room (I was in the hallway waiting on my husband to do urine culture) and I politely said ok and went in the other room. I heard her scolding her staff for letting me back and then she said I m not dealing with their issues anymore I m over it . I could not believe it. My husband came out and said what s wrong and I told him we would talk about it in the car. When she realized I heard her she tried to small talk about Texas but we just ignored her and left. We had to come back an hour later because we missed a call and they do not answer the phones( don t even Try) and when we got in there a worker (unaffiliated with the VA) said I don t know what happened but apparently there was a big fiasco in the back today someone from Texas. We thought are you kidding me????? When we told him the story he said please fill out a complaint this woman is horrible to EVERYONE. He asked us several times to fill one out but we didn t. I m so upset with the way that this woman is treating people especially our vets. She is rude, dramatic and even treats her staff horribly. Does she not understand that her clients have ptsd ? Does she know the horrific things our vets endured so she can have a job. I don t wish ill will for her but she needs to be replaced or sternly disciplined so she treats our vets better. We love some of the other people in there and they are genuinely excited when we come in and we appreciate how kind and great they treat us. This place needs a new office manger and this would prob be the best VA clinic around. I hate to say that but my heart is hurt for the people she is mistreating. I don t take a stand much on issues but when it comes to my husband and our vets, they put too much on the line for my freedom to not stand for them.
