About Albany Stratton VA Medical Center – Catskill Community Based OP

Catskill VA Clinic is an ambulatory health care facility under VA Albany health care, located in Catskill, New York. Some of their specific services include general, and specialized medical care, laboratory services, mental health, prescription and other specialty health care services. The insurance plans which they acknowledge include Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, military insurance, financial aid, as well as other options of self-pay.

They offer counseling and other support to people suffering from addiction, depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and OCD. They offer same-day help. You may qualify even without enrolling in VA health care.

Their confidential outpatient services include individual and group therapy for psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression. They provide counseling for marriage and relationship problems, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, addictive behaviors, and personality disorders, and aggressive or self-harming behaviors.

I especially like that for urgent health issues, they offer same-day appointments, telehealth visits, or walk-in express care. You just have to check with your local VA medical center to confirm availability of these services.

They can help you with resources and programs if you are trying to quit smoking or want to stop using tobacco. They provide support and strategies to add to optional nicotine replacement therapy prescribed by your primary care doctor. These include FDA-approved medications to manage nicotine withdrawal and the urge to smoke, counseling in person or by phone, Tobacco Cessation Quitline for individual counseling and strategies, SmokefreeVET text message program for daily advice and interactive support, and Stay Quit Coach mobile app to help you quit smoking and stay smoke-free.

Went here to prepare for my Dr's retirement. Couldn't understand a single word the Dr said! Had a45 minute interview that talked about off the wall subjects and anything but my health care concerns. This after 2 trips there! Had no idea if he understood me. Refused A drug I've taken for over a decade. After leaving and talking to my regular doctor (prior to retirement) he told me disregard & throw away what va gave me and treated me! I won't go back here until they get a proper Dr

Pitiful. The Dr here is worse than the Dr on The Simpsons. Go to Albany or use the VA program for urgent care coverage.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Levels of Care

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Albany VA Medical Center has an outpatient Nutrition Clinic staffed by registered dietitians. Their mission is to help improve the nutritional status of the population they serve by addressing their nutritional concerns. Whether your nutrition questions arise due to a medical condition or simply the desire to live a healthier life, their clinical staff can help you plan meals and snacks that will contribute to better health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Update: The head doctor of this clinic contacted me before the end of business day. I was very impressed by his quick response and concern. He stated that even though the policy does exist that visitors are not allowed there are situations for reasonable exceptions. He acknowledged that my history as the veteran s caretaker and the fact that we live in the same house allow for such an exception. I was told he spoke to the nurses and he rescheduled the appointment. At this point I will only pursue the complaint against the rude nurse. I am pleased with his response.Original review: I am a caregiver for a veteran who goes to this clinic. They have at times been kind and understanding but after today's interaction I will seek care for my veteran elsewhere. I am also filling a complaint in every available way. Due to what they said were their standard covid rules they would not allow me, his Healthcare proxy, to attend his appointment even after he expressed concern, became visibly upset, and stated he needed me to understand what strangers say to him. They became hostile and rude when I requested they grant this reasonable exception. Seeing as I have attended every single one of his appointments since the pandemic began I find this sudden change unnecessary and detrimental to the mental health of veterans. A certain nurse was especially rude and condescending, suggesting that only a veteran declared incompetent had a right to assistance in the doctors office. I will stand by my veteran and not allow him to be bullied into Healthcare that makes him uncomfortable. My question is will the NYS VA stand by the veterans?
