About Adult and Teen Challenge of Philadelphia

Adult and Teen Challenge of Philadelphia was a Christian based addiction and substance abuse treatment program for people 18 and older. It was a residential program. Their program combined faith based services with evidence based treatments for a comprehensive approach to treatment. They were located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Adult and Teen Challenge locations combine traditional, evidence based treatment methods with Christian fellowship. The faith component can serve as a powerful tool for those who already believe and open new avenues for those who don’t. If you’re opposed to a faith based approach, these centers may not be for you.

The Philadelphia location encouraged involvement in the ministry team. This offered opportunities to help with the organization’s outreach efforts in various ways. It was another means of skill development and cultivating faith.

The Philadelphia location has since closed, but Adult and Teen Challenge has multiple locations, including in Pennsylvania. Services offered may vary between locations, but the underlying principles of Christian faith underscore their mission.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Fear of withdrawal keeps many people locked in the vicious cycle of active substance use. Many people want to stop using, but simply don’t know how to deal with the physical withdrawal caused by drugs like heroin, prescription painkillers, benzos, and alcohol. Their comprehensive detoxification process provides patients with the environment of care needed to successfully transition from withdrawal to stabilization and holistic well-being.

Their short term program is a state license drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. Those that are in their short term program can expect a clinically based program with multiple group sessions daily and individual counseling sessions 1 to 2 times per week, this also includes family therapy. With over 50 years of successful operation the long term faith-based program contines it’s tradition of bringing wholeness to the hopeless. An adapted version of the 12-step program is complemented by Bible study, and community service.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

life-skills iconLife Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. desert iconMotivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

I used to volunteer services at Teen Challenge. In 2009 the cost for the entire year was 800.00. I would assume it has increased with inflation but the information stating a cost of $12,000 monthly is inaccurate. If you need help you should consider reaching out to Teen Ch ... Read More

I read the cross and the swichblade and my judge sent me there it was the best experience ever . It was a program that was faith based and holy spirit inspired jesus lead us straight to God . As disciples of christ we memorized whole chapters the word was brought to life they were not just words in a book anymore they were how we communicated with God parables psalms proverbs old and new testament it was a whole library a treasure chest full of how holy men were inspired with the Holy Spirit to give sound decrees precepts principles statues commandment and laws that even helped with health marriage social work ethics and moral issues in the family private and public lives of believers . Street ministry is living the word so when others see your hope you get to testify I was 14 than iam 58 now

Cannot say enough good things about this program, the staff, and the current women in the house. This is far from my first treatment or long term residential setting but I wish I had made this choice so much sooner. God is so good and so faithful!
